Restore window border GOG Tomb Raider 4 & 5

The GOG versions of Tomb Raider 4 and Tomb Raider 5 include a fix to remove the window border when playing fullscreen on modern Windows versions.

This fix however also removes the window border when playing in windowed mode and leaves the user unable to move the window.

This post details how to undo the fix and restore the window border.

Download the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) for your version of Windows. (I downloaded Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 2004)

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/get-started/adk-install

Run adksetup.exe you downloaded.

Select the option to install the Windows ADK to this computer and click next.

adksetup1

Choose whether or not to send usage data to Microsoft and click next.

adksetup2

Accept the License Agreement.

We only need to install the Compatibility Administrator program so uncheck all features except Application Compatibility Tools and click Install.

adksetup3

Run Compatibility Administrator (32 bit) which you will find in the start menu under Windows Kits.

compatibilityadmin

compatibilityscreen

Expand the Installed Databases node and then expand and select the Tomb Raider Chronicles Application to see the fixes for the game in the right hand panel.

We will remove the ForceSimpleWindow fix so the window border is no longer removed.

Right click on the GOG.com Tomb Raider 5 database and click uninstall.

uninstalldatabase

Click Open and navigate to the GOG Games\Tomb Raider 5 folder and open the file goggame.sdb.

sdbfile

With the Tomb Raider Chronicles Application selected, select the ForceSimpleWindow fix in the right hand panel.

fix

From the Edit menu click Delete to delete the ForceSimpleWindow fix.

delete

Click Save and save the database.

save

Right click the Tomb Raider 5 database and click Install.

reinstall

installed

With the database selected under Custom Databases select File>Close to close the database.

Repeat the steps; uninstall database, open goggame.sdb, delete ForceSimpleWindow fix, save database, install database and close database for Tomb Raider 4 if you wish.

Exit the Compatibility Administrator and now when you run Tomb Raider 5 in windowed mode the window border should be present.
